Theatre Makeup Class DescriptionTheatre Makeup

Instructor:

Tara Maginnis, Ph.D. (now retired from UAF)

Teaches the application of theatrical makeup for use onstage. Course covers old age, animal, character, horror, and corrective makeup, as well asbeards. Students must supply their own makeup kits (available at the UAF bookstore.)

Dr. Maginnis Gives a quickdemonstration of each style of makeup on her own face at the beginning of class.A real, live demo (no tapes) like these examples:

Fantasy makeup deigns include a Miro Painting (far left) aPicasso (center) and a Chagall (far right).

Materials: Ben Nye or Bob Kelley make-up kit; hand towel;cold cream, baby oil, or makeup remover; bar of soap; container; pencil sharpener.

Grading: Grading is based on a system of points given forsuccessful completion of assignments. The assignments are completed in class and are due onthe dates stated. Therefore attendance is a "must." There are 500 pointsobtainable in the regular assignments and there is no extra credit in this class. Gradingis based on the following table:

500-450 pts= A This comes out to: 100-90%

449-400 pts= B 89-80%

399-350 pts= C 79-70%

349-300 pts= D 69-60%

299- 0 pts= F 59-0%

Definitions:

Rendering- drawing of a design which one intends to execute.

Makeup rendering- drawing of a makeup design one intends to execute

Morgue- an organized file of clippings.

Makeup Morgue- an organized collection of clippings, pictures and old renderings to aid in inspiration for makeup design
